The terms of use for Cheltenham Open Data: how you may use the site and its data, licensing, classifieds and advert rules, and the limits of our liability.

1. Introduction

These terms govern your use of Cheltenham Open Data (cheltenham-od.uk). By using the site you accept them. If you don’t agree, please don’t use the site. The site is run by thechels.uk, a resident of Cheltenham. You can reach us via the contact page.

2. Data Accuracy and No Reliance

We gather and check data by hand from public sources, but we can’t promise it’s complete, accurate, or up to date. The site is provided “as is” and we accept no liability for the accuracy of any data.

Some pages cover time-sensitive or safety-critical topics — flood warnings, crime, food hygiene, air quality, GP and pharmacy details, and helplines among them. Always confirm anything important against the official source before you act on it, and in an emergency contact the emergency services. The data here is for general information only and is not professional advice.

3. Using the Site

You may use the site for personal, non-commercial purposes. You agree not to misuse it — for example by attempting to disrupt it, scrape it in a way that degrades the service, or use it for anything unlawful. Automated access should be reasonable and respect the site’s robots.txt and llms.txt.

4. Intellectual Property and Data Licensing

The site itself — its design, code, text, and the compilation of data — is © Cheltenham Open Data, all rights reserved.

The underlying data belongs to its respective providers and is used under their terms. Every data page names its source and licence under About This Data. Between them, the sources we use come under:

  • Open Government Licence v3.0: most UK government and public bodies, including the ONS, NHS, Environment Agency, Police, Land Registry, Department for Education, Ofsted and the CQC. This data is © Crown copyright and database right, licensed under the Open Government Licence v3.0.
  • Open Parliament Licence v3.0: UK Parliament data on MPs and general election results.
  • Open Database Licence (ODbL): OpenStreetMap, the source of many maps and lists of local places. Data © OpenStreetMap contributors.
  • Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 (CC BY 4.0): Give Food’s food bank data and The Toilet Map.
  • Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 (CC BY-SA 4.0): Open Charge Map’s EV charging data.
  • Publishers’ own data licences or service terms: power cuts from National Grid Electricity Distribution, train times from the Rail Data Marketplace, and services such as OpenWeather, parkrun, InPost, DPD and TheSportsDB.
  • No stated licence: some figures come from public pages that state no reuse terms, such as council registers and reports and Water UK’s storm overflow data. We summarise them and link to the original.
  • Crown copyright: the national terrorism threat level, from MI5.
  • Our own data: lists we research and keep ourselves, such as clubs, festivals, third spaces and helpful contacts, are © Cheltenham Open Data.

If you reuse any dataset, you must comply with that dataset’s licence, including its attribution requirements. Our own compilation and presentation of the data are not covered by those open licences.

5. Classifieds and Submissions

Anyone submitting a classified advert is responsible for the accuracy and legality of what they post. Adverts must be lawful, genuine, and relevant to local readers. We may edit, decline, or remove any advert at our discretion, and we don’t guarantee that a submission will be published. We are a platform for these listings, not a party to any transaction between an advertiser and a reader — any dealings you have with an advertiser are strictly between you and them.

Some links on the site are affiliate links, which may earn us a small commission if you make a purchase, at no extra cost to you. This never affects our editorial content or the data we publish. See the Privacy Policy for how the referral tags work.

The UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) and the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) require sites to be open about commercial relationships. That’s why you’ll see affiliate link disclosures clearly marked.

7. Sponsorship

Sponsored placements are clearly labelled and never influence the data or editorial content of the site. Sponsorship is governed by separate Sponsorship Terms.

The site links to external sites we don’t control. We’re not responsible for their content, accuracy, or privacy practices, and a link is not an endorsement.

9. Availability

We aim to keep the site available but don’t guarantee uninterrupted access. We may change, suspend, or withdraw any part of the site at any time without notice.

10. Limitation of Liability

To the extent permitted by law, we accept no liability for any loss or damage arising from your use of, or reliance on, the site or its data. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be excluded under law.

11. Governing Law

These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and any disputes are subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of its courts.

12. Changes to These Terms

We may update these terms from time to time. The current version always lives on this page, with a revised “last updated” date.
