Cheltenham Gas & Electricity Use

How much gas and electricity Cheltenham's homes and businesses use each year, how a typical home compares with the South West and England, and a map of use by ward and small area.

  • 451 GWh of electricity used in 2024
  • 755 GWh of gas used in 2024
  • 3,169 kWh of electricity per home
  • 10,831 kWh of gas per home

How Much Energy Do Cheltenham’s Homes Use?

Every gas and electricity meter in Great Britain reports how much energy it uses each year, and the government publishes the totals for every council and neighbourhood. This page shows how much gas and electricity Cheltenham uses, how a typical home’s use has changed since 2005, and how it compares with the South West and England.

The map shows where in town homes use the most and least. Bigger and older homes, especially detached houses and Regency and Victorian properties that are harder to insulate, tend to use more gas for heating, while flats and newer homes use less. Our Cheltenham home energy ratings page shows how efficient those same homes are, and Cheltenham renewable energy shows how much of the town’s electricity comes from solar panels.

Gas and Electricity Use in Cheltenham

In 2024 Cheltenham used 451 gigawatt hours (GWh) of electricity and 755 GWh of gas. Homes used 180 GWh of the electricity and 549 GWh of the gas; the rest went to businesses, public buildings and other non-domestic meters.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Is a Kilowatt Hour?

  • A kilowatt hour (kWh) is the unit on an energy bill: the energy used running something rated at 1 kilowatt for an hour. A gigawatt hour (GWh) is a million kWh.

What Is the Difference Between the Average and the Median?

  • The average (mean) adds up all the energy used and divides it by the number of meters. The median is the use of the home in the middle when every home is lined up from lowest to highest.
  • A few homes that use a lot, such as large houses or homes heated by electricity, pull the average up, so the median is usually lower and closer to what a typical home uses.

What Does Weather-Corrected Mean?

  • Homes use more gas in a cold year. The government adjusts gas figures to what would have been used in a year of typical weather, so years can be compared fairly. Electricity figures are not adjusted.

Why Do Some Areas Use More Energy Than Others?

  • Bigger homes, older homes that are harder to insulate and homes with more people tend to use more. Homes heated by electricity, such as many flats and homes with heat pumps, use more electricity and little or no gas.
  • Our Cheltenham home energy ratings page maps how energy efficient homes are across the same wards and small areas.

What Is a Small Area?

  • Small areas are the neighbourhoods the Office for National Statistics uses for its statistics (lower layer super output areas), each with around 1,500 people. Cheltenham has 77.
  • Ward figures add up the small areas within each ward. Where a small area crosses a ward boundary, it counts in the ward that holds most of it.

How Often Is This Page Updated?

  • The figures are published once a year, in December, for the year before. We check for new figures every month.

About This Data

Data from the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero's subnational electricity and gas consumption statistics, published under the Open Government Licence v3.0. Small area and ward boundaries are from the ONS Open Geography Portal. Last updated 31 October 2026, checked monthly. Council figures run from 2005 to 2024; small area figures are for 2024 and cover homes only. Gas figures are weather-corrected. Contains OS data © Crown copyright and database right.
