What Counts as a Road Collision Here?

Only collisions on public roads in which at least one person was injured and that were reported to the police. Damage-only collisions are not recorded, and neither are collisions that nobody reported. Slight injuries are the most likely to go unreported, so the real number of injury collisions is higher than shown.

How Is Severity Decided?

The police record each casualty as fatal, serious or slight. Fatal means the person died within 30 days of the collision. Serious covers injuries such as fractures, or an injury that needs a stay in hospital. Slight covers less severe injuries such as sprains and bruising. A collision takes the severity of its worst casualty.

Why Does the Map Show Only Fatal and Serious Collisions?

Does It Say Who Was at Fault?

No. The data records what happened, where and who was involved, not who was to blame, and it holds no names or personal details.

Does a Road With More Collisions Mean It Is More Dangerous?

Not necessarily. The figures count collisions but not how much traffic a road carries, so busy roads have more collisions than quiet ones. A count is a starting point for asking questions, not a ranking of danger.

The Department for Transport publishes road safety data, known as STATS19, from police reports, and it is published under the Open Government Licence v3.0. This page is refreshed by hand when a new release is published, which is once a year.
