Sport in Cheltenham: Teams to Watch

Where to watch sport in and around Cheltenham, from the Robins and the Cricket Festival to top-flight rugby, plus parkrun and local sports clubs to join.

Sport in Cheltenham

Cheltenham has one professional club of its own, a top-flight rugby side on its doorstep, and a strong grassroots scene — from parkrun’s free weekly runs to running, cycling, hiking and climbing clubs for every level.

Teams to Watch

Cheltenham Town FC

Cheltenham’s own professional football club, “The Robins”, play in EFL League Two at Whaddon Road. See our Cheltenham Town FC page for the next fixture, recent results and how to get to the ground.

Cheltenham Town Women FC

Cheltenham Town Women play in the FA Women’s National League Southern Premier Division — the third tier of the English women’s football pyramid — sharing Bishops Cleeve FC’s Kayte Lane ground just north of Cheltenham.

Gloucestershire Cricket

Gloucestershire County Cricket Club’s men’s and women’s teams play most home matches in Bristol, but come to Cheltenham College each summer for the Cheltenham Cricket Festival, the world’s longest-running cricket festival at an out-ground, held at the College since 1872. See our Gloucestershire cricket page for the teams, a map and directions to the grounds, and links to official fixtures and tickets.

Gloucester Rugby

Gloucester Rugby play in the Gallagher PREM — England’s top flight of rugby union — at Kingsholm Stadium, a few miles up the road in Gloucester rather than Cheltenham itself, but close enough to be the local top-flight side for most of the county.

parkrun

Cheltenham has four parkrun events, all free: two 5k runs on Saturday mornings, and two 2k junior parkruns for 4 to 14 year olds on Sunday mornings. See our Cheltenham parkrun page for locations and a map.

Sports Clubs to Join

Beyond the professional sides, Cheltenham has clubs for running and athletics, cricket and rugby, cycling, climbing, cheerleading, hiking and walking, boxing, archery, croquet and triathlon. Browse them all in our sports clubs to join directory, or the wider list of clubs and societies.
