How Energy Efficient Are Cheltenham’s Homes?

Every home that is built, sold or let needs an Energy Performance Certificate, rating its energy efficiency from A, the most efficient, to G, the least. This page brings together the latest certificate for each of the homes in Cheltenham that have one, to show how the town compares from ward to ward and street to street.

Cheltenham’s housing ranges from Regency terraces and Victorian villas to post-war estates and new builds, and the map shows how that mix plays out. Use the map to compare areas by the share of homes rated C or better (C+) or the share in any one rating from A to G, and the tables below it for the figures. Each ward’s own page also shows its ratings alongside its house prices, crime and broadband.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Is an Energy Performance Certificate?

  • An Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rates how energy efficient a home is, from A, the most efficient, to G, the least. A home needs one when it is built, sold or let, and each certificate lasts ten years.

What Does C+ Mean?

  • C+ means rated C or better: A, B or C. The C+ column and map show the share of an area's homes with one of those three ratings.

Why Measure Homes Rated C or Better?

  • Band C is the government's benchmark for an energy-efficient home. Its Clean Growth Strategy set the aim of as many homes as possible reaching band C by 2035, where practical, cost-effective and affordable.
  • The government has also confirmed that privately rented homes in England and Wales will need to reach band C by 1 October 2030, so the share of homes already at C or better shows how far an area has to go. See our Cheltenham rent prices page for what renting costs locally.

What Does the Median Rating Mean?

  • Line up an area's homes from A to G and the median is the rating of the home in the middle: half the homes are rated the same or better, and half the same or worse. It is the rating of a typical home in the area.
  • Each home counts once, using its latest certificate.

Does This Cover Every Home in Cheltenham?

  • No. It covers the 43,617 homes that have had a certificate, as homes that haven't been sold, let or built since certificates began don't have one.
  • 26.3% of these certificates are more than ten years old, so some homes will have been improved since they were rated.

How Can I Find the Rating for a Particular Home?
