Using Police.uk street-level crime data and the Office for National Statistics’ population estimates, the map shades every part of Cheltenham by its crime rate over the last 12 months, measured per 1,000 residents so busy and quiet areas can be compared fairly.

Can I See How an Area Has Changed?
- Yes. A slider steps the 12-month period back a month at a time, with the earliest covering August 2023 to July 2024, so you can see whether crime in an area is rising or falling.
Where Does the Data Come From?
- Crime figures come from Police.uk, population estimates from the Office for National Statistics via Nomis, and area boundaries from the ONS Open Geography Portal.
Why Does the Town Centre Stand Out?
- Rates are measured against the people who live in an area, and far more people visit the town centre to shop, work and go out than live there, so its rate is much higher than anywhere else.
