Cheltenham Open Data has published a new economy page, showing the size and shape of Cheltenham’s economy.
It shows employee jobs in every industry, each industry’s share of jobs compared with England, and how the total has changed since 2015. It also charts the number of registered businesses since 2010, with a breakdown by size, and the number of residents claiming unemployment-related benefits each month since 2015 compared with England.
The page sits alongside employment rates and median earnings under All About Cheltenham.

Where Does the Data Come From?
- The Office for National Statistics, through Nomis: the Business Register and Employment Survey, UK Business Counts and the Claimant Count, all published under the Open Government Licence v3.0.
How Often Is It Updated?
- The claimant count is published monthly, and jobs and businesses once a year. The page is refreshed monthly.
What Is the Claimant Count?
- The number of people claiming unemployment-related benefits. It is not the official unemployment rate, and the roll-out of Universal Credit raised it between 2013 and 2018.
