Across all 41 rated homes, 32 (78%) are rated good or outstanding, and nine require improvement. None is rated inadequate. But 13 of the good or outstanding ratings were published before 2020. Key Figures

  • 6 of 11 care homes rated in 2026 require improvement. Four were rated good and one outstanding.
  • 32 of 41 rated care homes are good or outstanding.
  • 13 good or outstanding ratings were published before 2020, the oldest in September 2017.
  • 9 of 9 requires improvement ratings were published in 2023 or later.
  • 22 homes have a rating published since the start of 2023. Of those, nine require improvement.

Recent Ratings Are Tougher

Every Cheltenham care home rating published between 2017 and 2022 is good or outstanding. Every requires improvement rating has been published since 2023. Of the 22 homes rated since the start of 2023, 13 are good or outstanding and nine require improvement.

Ratings do change. One home rated requires improvement in June 2026 was rated good when its new report was published on 1 October.

That does not mean the homes with older ratings would do worse if inspected today. The CQC inspects homes more often when it has concerns, so the homes it has visited recently are not a random sample. But it does mean that for 13 homes, the good or outstanding rating a family sees today reflects an inspection at least six years old.

Notes to Editors

  • Method: All locations in Cheltenham registered with the CQC as residential or nursing care homes and holding a current overall rating. Ratings are grouped by the date the rating was published. Two care homes have no current rating and are left out, including one whose new provider registered in May 2026 and has not been inspected yet.
  • Source: Care Quality Commission, registered locations and latest ratings, from the CQC’s API.
  • Caveats: The publication date is when the CQC published the rating, usually some weeks after the inspection. The CQC changed how it assesses services from late 2023, which may affect how recent ratings compare with older ones. A rating covers the whole home and five areas: safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led.
