Cheltenham Open Data Adds Live River Chelt Sewage Overflow Status
Live storm overflow status for the River Chelt and its tributary brooks, sourced from Severn Trent Water's Event Duration Monitors.
We’ve added a new sewage overflow status page, showing near-real-time storm overflow status for the River Chelt and the brooks that feed it, alongside our existing flood warnings page.
Severn Trent Water fits an Event Duration Monitor (EDM) to each storm overflow, recording exactly when it starts and stops discharging untreated wastewater during heavy rainfall. We pull that feed via Water UK’s National Storm Overflow Hub, filtered to the 12 monitored overflows within 4 miles of Cheltenham, and show them on a map and sortable table.

Where Does the Data Come From?
- Severn Trent Water’s Event Duration Monitors, published via Water UK’s National Storm Overflow Hub. No formal open licence is stated, but it’s published as a free public data feed.
Does This Tell Me About Water Quality?
- Not directly. It tracks discharge activity, not chemical water quality like nitrates or bacteria levels — a storm overflow discharging is a normal, permitted release valve for the sewer network during heavy rain, not necessarily a sign of a problem. How Often Is It Updated?
- Several times a day, alongside the existing flood alert refresh. Severn Trent aims to publish each discharge event within about an hour of it happening.
